Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish Picnic brings fun to Swoyersville

SWOYERSVILLE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Every summer, hundreds of people make their way to the Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish Picnic in Swoyersville for homemade food, live entertainment, and a chance to reconnect with family and friends.
For many, the annual event has become much more than a church festival — it’s a hometown tradition that spans generations.
Volunteer Jayda Wolenski says the picnic’s popularity has earned it a fitting nickname.
“I was told this is essentially the Super Bowl of Swoyersville,” Wolenski said. “Everybody around here comes. People from California come. Everybody just flies down to come. So far, the furthest people that came were from California.”
Families have long marked the annual picnic on their calendars, returning each year to enjoy favorite foods, spend time together, and celebrate the close-knit community.
Visitors lined up for homemade specialties including potato pancakes and broccoli pasta, while others tried their luck at bingo or enjoyed live music throughout the day.
For Ivy O’Boyle, the food and familiar faces are what keep bringing her back.
“We came for potato pancakes and snow cones,” O’Boyle said. “They’re really good. And we were really hungry. And all the people and friends around.”
Organizers say the event offers something for everyone, with games, entertainment, and activities for all ages. But attendees say it’s the sense of community that makes the picnic special.
“It brings people together honestly,” said Vanessa Shybloski of Swoyersville. “It helps them experience new things for the first time, like new food if they want.”
Judging by the packed parking lots and long food lines, the tradition remains as popular as ever.
Every meal purchased, bingo card played, and game enjoyed helps support St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish.
Whether locals call it a church picnic or the “Super Bowl of Swoyersville,” one thing remains clear: the annual festival continues to bring generations of families together while supporting the parish that has served the community for decades.
